Grønland og den grønlandske befolkning er i denne tid brutalt kastet ind på den storpolitiske scene.
Trumps gentagne udmeldinger om, at USA ønsker at kontrollere og eje Grønland – om nødvendigt med militære midler – kommer i en situation med store opbrud i det imperialistiske system. Udmeldingerne indgår i USA-imperialismens desperate forsøg på at opretholde sin politiske og økonomiske magt, som er for nedadgående. De er udtryk for rendyrket imperialistisk supermagtspolitik over for det grønlandske folk.
Det er en uhørt provokation, at Trump er rede til at starte en imperialistisk krig, en erobrings- og plyndringskrig for at kontrollere Grønland i forsøget på at oprette et Fort USA fra Grønland og Canada over Mexico til Panama.
Danmark, USA og de øvrige vestlige imperialistiske lande og deres NATO-alliance har en fælles interesse i at fastholde Grønland i et jerngreb. Det skyldes især to forhold.
Dels Grønlands militære og sikkerhedspolitiske geografiske position. Et militariseret og oprustet Grønland er udset til at udgøre en fremskudt base imod både Rusland og Kina. Ligeledes bliver kontrollen over søvejene mod nord, Nordøstpassagen, mere og mere vigtig i takt med klimaforandringernes påvirkning.
Dels Grønlands ressourcerige undergrund, herunder især eksistensen af sjældne og strategiske jordarter og mineraler. Trump ønsker, at amerikanske selskaber, hvoraf mange har investeret massivt i hans genvalg, får uhindret adgang til den grønlandske undergrund. Udover udsigten til superprofitter er det både USA’s og Danmarks strategiske mål at holde Kina langt væk fra Grønland.
Både for USA og Danmark er kontrol over Grønland vigtig, om end metoder og aftaler kan være forskellige. For USA er Grønland og det grønlandske folk en simpel handelsvare, der kan købes og sælges efter forgodtbefindende. For Danmarks vedkommende spiller Grønland en anden rolle:
Grønlands status som koloni og halvkoloni under Danmark har i årtier givet den danske regering og borgerskab en betydning og indflydelse i international politik, som rækker langt ud over Danmarks faktiske størrelse og placering. Det årlige danske tilskud på lidt over fire milliarder kroner til Grønland er billige penge, for at Danmark kan købe sig til international indflydelse. Uden dansk overhøjhed over Grønland vil Danmark blive reduceret til et lille betydningsløst kongerige, som næppe igen bliver medlem af FN’s Sikkerhedsråd.
Trump-administrationen og Make America Great Again-bevægelsen taler nu kynisk kravet om grønlandsk selvstændighed op for at kunne tage over, hvor dansk kolonialisme og imperialisme hører op. Uden respekt for Grønlands ret til selvbestemmelse og national suverænitet.
De 57.000 indbyggere i Grønland er folkeretsligt anerkendt som et folk i egen ret. De har derfor retten til selv at bestemme deres fremtid. Den bestemmes ikke i USA eller Danmark.
Det principielle spørgsmål er således anerkendelsen af Grønlands ret til en selvstændig statsdannelse, og at dette bestemmes og besluttes af det grønlandske folk suverænt.
Op til valget til Grønlands parlament Inatsisartut den 11. marts er presset på den grønlandske befolkning og de grønlandske politikere massivt. Valget af de 31 medlemmer af Inatsisartut vil være definerende for, hvilken proces for håndhævelse af den nationale selvbestemmelse, der sættes i gang.
Og Grønlands fremtid har ikke kun betydning for den grønlandske befolkning. Den har også stor betydning for inuit-befolkningerne i det arktiske område. Den er af betydning for naturens skrøbelige balancer i Arktis og faren for rovdrift på den og områdets ressourcer under og over vand- og jordoverfladen.
For at holde imperialistmagterne ude af Arktis er det afgørende, om det lykkes Grønland at styrke sin selvbestemmelse, økonomiske uafhængighed og at indgå internationale alliancer baseret på lighed og gensidig respekt.
Som danske kommunister og antiimperialister har vi en særlig forpligtelse til at støtte det grønlandske folks ønsker og kamp for selvbestemmelse og national suverænitet og for at sætte et punktum for århundreder med dansk kolonialt overherredømme. Retten til selvbestemmelse indbefatter også retten til selvstændighed og løsrivelse.
Kommunistisk Parti opfordrer alle antiimperialister og demokrater til ikke blot at afvise og bekæmpe USA-imperialismen krigs- og erobringstrusler, men også at støtte Grønlands opgør med den danske kolonimagt. Hvilken samfundsindretning, hvilke samarbejder og alliancer Grønland vælger at indgå for reelt og i praksis at kunne håndhæve sin selvbestemmelse bestemmes alene i Nuuk.
The right to self-determination can only be exercised from Nuuk
Greenland and the Greenlandic people have been brutally thrown into the political scene.
Trump’s repeated statements that the US wants to control and own Greenland – by military means if necessary – come at a time of great upheaval in the imperialist system. These statements are part of US imperialism’s desperate attempt to maintain its declining political and economic power. They are an expression of pure imperialist superpower politics against the Greenlandic people.
It is an unprecedented provocation that Trump is prepared to start an imperialist war, a war of conquest and plunder to control Greenland in an attempt to create a Fortress USA from Greenland and Canada across Mexico to Panama.
Denmark, the US and the other Western imperialist countries and their NATO alliance have a common interest in keeping Greenland in an iron grip. This is mainly due to two factors.
Firstly, Greenland’s military and security policy geographical position. A militarised and rearmed Greenland is intended to be an advanced base against both Russia and China. Likewise, control of the sea routes to the north, the Northeast Passage, is becoming increasingly important as climate change takes hold.
Secondly, Greenland’s resource-rich subsurface, especially the existence of rare and strategic earths and minerals. Trump wants US companies, many of which have invested heavily in his re-election, to have unfettered access to the Greenlandic minerals deposit resources. Besides the prospect of super-profits, keeping China far away from Greenland is a strategic goal for both the US and Denmark.
For both the US and Denmark, control over Greenland is important, although the methods and agreements may differ. For the US, Greenland and the Greenlandic people are a simple commodity that can be bought and sold at will. For Denmark, Greenland plays a different role:
Greenland’s status as a colony and semi-colony under Denmark has for decades given the Danish government and bourgeoisie an importance and influence in international politics that goes far beyond Denmark’s actual size and location. The annual Danish subsidy of just over DKK 4 billion to Greenland is cheap money for Denmark to buy international influence. Without Danish sovereignty over Greenland, Denmark will be reduced to a small, insignificant kingdom that is unlikely to become a member of the UN Security Council again.
The Trump administration and the Make America Great Again movement are now cynically raising the demand for Greenlandic independence to take over where Danish colonialism and imperialism ends. Without respect for Greenland’s right to self-determination and national sovereignty.
The 57,000 inhabitants of Greenland are recognised under international law as a people in their own right. They therefore have the right to determine their own future. It is not determined in the US or Denmark.
The fundamental issue is therefore the recognition of Greenland’s right to an independent statehood, and that this is determined and decided by the Greenlandic people sovereignly.
In the run-up to the election to Greenland’s parliament Inatsisartut on 11 March, the pressure on the Greenlandic population and Greenlandic politicians is massive. The election of the 31 members of Inatsisartut will define the process for enforcing national self-determination.
And the future of Greenland is not only important for the Greenlandic people. It also matters to the Inuit peoples of the Arctic region. It matters for the fragile balance of nature in the Arctic and the danger of overexploitation of it and the region’s resources below and above the water and land surface.
To keep the imperialist powers out of the Arctic, it is crucial that Greenland succeeds in strengthening its self-determination, economic independence and international alliances based on equality and mutual respect.
As Danish communists and anti-imperialists, we have a special obligation to support the wishes and struggle of the Greenlandic people for self-determination and national sovereignty and to put an end to centuries of Danish colonial domination. The right to self-determination also includes the right to independence and secession.
Danish Communist Party calls on all anti-imperialists and democrats to not only reject and fight US imperialism’s threats of war and conquest, but also to support Greenland’s showdown with the Danish colonial power. How Greenland will organize its society, with whom it will collaborate, which alliances it chooses to enter into to be able to enforce its self-determination in reality and in practice – all this is determined solely in Nuuk.
